A breastfeeding mom, when their child has diarrhea, will want to be on a bland foods diet to rule out any nutrient intolerance/allergy their infant may accept developed until the kid is fine again.

NEVER STOP BREASTFEEDING WHEN YOUR BABY IS Ill. That is the most misinformed and unsafe bit of communication out there. Breastfeeding is what is going to help your child and keep your kid OUT of the hospital. Breastmilk contains natural antibiotics. Numerous doctors and nurses take told me that breastfeeding is the Best possible thing I could have done for my child when he was sick and to continue to breastfeed as much equally he wanted to. They told me that in fact I had saved my kid from a infirmary visit/becoming very ill as he refuses to consume or drink pretty much anything except breastmilk when he is ill.

I agree with Amber. I breastfed my 14-month old son through his tour of diarrhea (with very high fever 39C+) and it helped him a lot since he didn't want to consume or drink plus it comforts him. Unfortunately, he has loose stools over again which has been going on for several days now minus the fever though - the chief reason why I was searching for answers that somewhen led me to this site.

When I read about halting breastfeeding, I immediately looked for supporting data elsewhere coz I was doubtful about that. I knew that whatever sickness you or the baby has, breast milk is his all-time source of antibodies. Glad I did as well! This is PATH'south publication about Breastfeeding and Diarrhea: http://www.path.org/publications/detail.php?i=1551...

As well an excerpt from KellyMom:

1- Breastfeeding should be the Offset choice if your child tin can take anything by mouth. Because of the ease and rapidity with which breastmilk is digested, even if your child vomits or stools presently later on nursing, he will withal have retained some of the nutrients. Other foods that are often suggested (such every bit Pedialyte, sports drinks, gelatins and sodas) offering little nutritional value and none of the antibodies that human milk contains.

ii- When your breastfed child is ill you'll want to offer more frequent feedings -- this can limit the volume taken in at one time and helps to comfort and soothe a sick child. If your child is airsickness often and non keeping the milk downwards for long, information technology may be helpful to breastfeed ofttimes simply limit the length of each nursing session (so your kid takes in less milk at once). Another selection is for Mom to limited some milk before breastfeeding then that the milk catamenia is slower. RARELY does the babe who is allowed to breastfeed at will during a vomiting or diarrhea illness become dehydrated.

3- Babies who are immune to go on breastfeeding through an illness such as this are less probable to become dehydrated than those who are taken off the breast. Continued nursing also provides your child with precious antibodies that will forbid the disease from worsening and speed healing. Nursing is also very comforting to your child, which is healing in itself.

Thank you!

Amber on Feb 12, 2011:

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO Non STOP BREASTFEEDING A BABY WITH DIARRHEA!!!! The data in this is inaccurate. Yes, it is best to avert dairy in children with diarrhea, but breastmilk is Non dairy....I am non a cow, I am a homo, therefore my milk is not dairy! Howevever, I should avert dairy while nursing a babe with diarrhea. Nursing your babe frequently (every hr or so) is the best way to combat aridity in an infant suffering from diarrhea. You may give a pocket-sized corporeality of pedialite from a sippy loving cup or bottle between nursings if needed.

Some of this can be helpful. Simply it is very dangerous to be advising people to stop feeding their babies breast milk or formula during an episode of diarrhea! Formula and milk Are fluids with electrolytes in them as well. And giving your baby pedialyte without consulting a md outset can exist dangerous.

Karee on November 17, 2010:

Is it ok to requite cows milk to the toddler with 8 days of diarrhea? I discontinued it after the 2d day but I'1000 getting worried that he's not getting the milk. Should I buy lactose gratuitous vitamin D milk?

Cheque your advice... on October 02, 2010:

You should NOT be advising moms to stop breastfeeding while a babe has diarrhea - it's non the same as cow milk and has valuable antibodies to aid the baby fight infection. Please exercise some more research before posting something like this.

Primrose on September 08, 2010:

Hey guys. Thanks for all the aid. Im gonna try the BRAT..im sure it volition help. My 8 month ane calendar week old baby got diarrhoea like iii days agone but i wasn't sure if information technology was it on the 1st day. The 2nd twenty-four hour period,i had 2 change like 6 diapers in 16 hours which is very abnormal coz i use very good diapers that can last 8 hours. He hasn't passed any stools since today simply he is kinda irritant, but hey he due south such a potent due north 4ever smiling baby. He nonetheless is able to keep that smile. The good affair i guess is coz im all the same breastfeeding him and he is really up to it.

One communication i can give to all those that are even so planning on having more babies is to brand sure they get Rotavirus vaccination for their babies..it protects them from diarrhoea. I learnt virtually the vaccine when my infant was 6 months and when i reached the infirmary, the nurses for the Dr told me since my baby is over two months, chances of him getting information technology were null coz it affects babies around ii months n since he didn't become it then we safe. I believed them and went on to get Pneumococcal and Hib vaccines for my baby since he was at the right time for them. If just i had checked /known,this would ve been avoided. Guess nosotros all learn from our mistakes. There is nothing equally sad as a ill infant and hey its better to forbid than to cure. Stay blessed u all and take intendance of those cute innocent beings. Primrose Bonzo. Gaborone. Botswana. Southern Africa

Hullo in that location, This spider web-site helps. I accept a 9 week old and he has had ii diapers that was diarrhea. And so I am just keeping my eye out on him today. He has peed which is good. I am also a breastfeeding mom and then if he wants more milk I will give it to him since information technology has a lot of great antibodies and he really can benefit from it. Thanks because I was worried.

Renie on June xiii, 2010:

My son Reave had a gastro0intestinal infection a couple months ago and it tin last 3 weeks. Those unremarkably come as both vomiting and diarrhea. Best advise i tin give: If yous accept a dishwasher, put your child's plastic toys through a bicycle, it does a bang-up job of killing off a lot of germs. Be careful with juice and fruits considering they tin arrive worse. Try to maintain his sleep schedule as much as possible and if they are down to a unmarried nap a solar day, try calculation in a 2nd nap. Continue your absurd. Toddlers become REALLY feisty when they are sick. Call back about how y'all feel when you are sick and how it feels to have people screwing with you all the time. Patience is primal. Most important, TALK TO YOUR Dr. RIGHT Abroad. Don't wait. If yous hit 24-hour interval 2 and it's the same or getting worse don't hesitate, you can make information technology worse by waiting.

My baby has diarree i had no idea i had to stop giving him milk formulaThanks a lot

Concerned on May 17, 2010:

You mention not breastfeeding, this is very wrong. Breast milk is not similar regular milk. Perhaps milk should exist avoided past the mother breastfeeding. Breast milk helps with immunity, keeping hydrated, and has antibacterial qualities. If anything a breastfed infant should receive more breast milk!

autumndaddy on May 12, 2010:

Thanks for the hub. Lots of useful communication.

Merely a heads upward for parents who like to sweeten toddlers milk (since they will not drinkable it otherwise) with either honey or sugar. Be very conscientious to avoid any artificial sweeteners particularly polyols (sugar alcohols) such as Maltitol. Sugar alcohols commonly cause diarrhea and gas in ADULTS, children tin can be effected by very small amounts. Just today my wife accidently bought imitation love containing various carbohydrate alcohols (particularly maltitol, lots of it) and my poor baby (18 months) has had the worst diarrhea. She'southward been drinking beloved in her milk every morning for the past four months (since the doctor ok'd it)

and never had a problem.

teresa on April xviii, 2010:

teething causes dirrhea doesnot seem to be biological, babies having eruption of teeth do have itching and they tend to put whatever affair they happen to pick in their mouth, and this could be the reason that they have dirrhea during teething

jay on March 28, 2010:

These tips helped a lot. Just why did you say toast if I cant give my infant butter?

how-do-you-do.my baby s 9mo northward 2wks old.she's been having diarrhea for a calendar week now simply since she is teething i am really not certain what is the existent thing.i just saw your hub now n i will outset doing it today.she is still the active due north happy baby a calendar week before that..hope this will help..byt the way the whole calendar week was like d diarrgea was coming north going..

Sarah-Ann on March 25, 2010:

You're information was very helpful. My daughter is on the 3rd day of having diarrhea, Ive been doing all this to endeavour and care for it.. Shes been having things like breads( zip on it) and plain murphy (mashed) Hopefully it stops presently, People accept been telling me its because of teething as she got her 2 bottem ones in jan 2010, she but got her 2 height ones a couple of days ago, and ii more on the sides are now nigh through and so shes non a happy babe.

Appam - No, y'all do Care for diarrhea, Its not always possible to prevent information technology, every bit teething babies tin get it and there is nothing you tin can do to end it.

appam from India on February 25, 2010:

Don't treat diarrhea; You forestall diarrhea, breast feed as long equally possible. Let the kid enjoy the issue, y'all also.

Rebecca on February 20, 2010:

Do NOT STOP BREASTFEEDING. Any advice that tells a nursing mom to stop breastfeeding is blatantly Incorrect and MISINFORMED. blessedmom, that is horrible, terrible advice! An abrupt discontinuation of breastfeeding tin only dehydrate the infant and cause mastitis in the mom. The BEST Matter TO Exercise for a babe with diarrhea is to BREASTFEED Equally MUCH As POSSIBLE---YOUR BREASTMILK IS A TAILOR-Fabricated MEDICINE for your infant!

graceth0mas from Philadelphia, PA on February 02, 2010:

Thank y'all for sharing. I take a 4-calendar month old infant and sometimes its really hard to tell if it'due south diarrhea or she just really need to spill it all out. I learned a lot from your hub.

les on January 24, 2010:

my infant is ix months old and she has had diarrhea for the past 2 days. i've been giving her pedyalyte, is there a limit to how much i tin give her. i'chiliad taking her to the medico tomorrow.

ruth on January 19, 2010:

pedianurse is i of the few people saying anything sensible here. What goes for ane babe / toddler doesn't go for all! Breastfeeding is practically NEVER contra-indicative to a infant - a female parent will exist producing anti-bodies to any bug a infant gets and she will pass this dorsum to her baby. Speak to your doctor, or pediatric nurse - but don't stop breastfeeding your baby just because someone elses baby was lactose intolerant! (if they stuck their hand in the fire, would you?)

Gajapathy Venkatesh on Jan 18, 2010:

Thank you Blessedmom for your post. My 6 months quondam son is besides suffering from diarreah for the past 3 days. We took him to the md on the very first day. Because he was completely dehydrated within 2 hours.

It is better to take the babe to a hospital and start IV fluids at once. Before taking to the hospital, as an emergency measure assistance we can requite some water with Table salt added to information technology.

marilyn on December 23, 2009:

My daughter will exist 3 months in a couple of days, as has diarrhea equally well, i took her to the dr. and she said to continue to requite her formula only to give her 2 ounces of pedialyte between feeding to avoid dehadraytion...if the diarrhea connected to cease the formula and merely feed her the pedialyte. Well it hasn't gotten better this is her third day, so every bit of this morn im only giving her pedialyte. Im hoping this works she wetting her diapers, her rima oris isn't dry, she doesn't accept a fever,,,,just information technology's stressing when she poops a second later on her feedings.. :(

Ayelet-Hashachar Birulin on December 06, 2009:

It is not usually necessary and tin, in fact, be quite unsafe to stop breastfeeding a baby, particularly one that is exclusively breastfed. Like all matters,it is advisable to consult 1'due south pediatrician before taking such a desperate stride.
